Most people just feed their fish, shaking the small bottle of flakes over their fish bowl to give their fish food without ever knowing what those flakes are made of in the first place. It’s an odd question to ask for many people. Most don’t really care what their fish eat, but for many fish owners, the health of their pet is very important. So a good bit of information for any fish owner to understand is what is fish food made of.
Fish food is not surprisingly (if you’ve ever smelled it) made of different types of fish and shellfish products. Much of this material comes from scraps of fish that is being processed for human consumption. It’s a good use of little bits of fish that can’t really be used to make a meal for anyone. Other fish are harvested specifically for fish food, which are not necessarily used often for human consumption because of their low quality and size. These two types of fish sources are known as fish meal and they are used mostly as protein for fishes to eat.
Related to this is shrimp meal. Again, it is shrimp not fit for human consumption so it is dried and then ground up into meal. Shrimp are mainly used as protein, but they have the added benefit of giving extra color to fish that make them look more vibrant and appealing. If you have bright tropical fish, food made with this type of material can be a great benefit.
Close to this is brine shrimp and squid meal. These are also protein sources, but they also include very valuable amino acids and other nutrients that are great for digestion for fish. These can greatly improve their health.
Finally, whole wheat is used as a dietary fiber for many types of fish. This helps their digestion and is used by some fish to control digestion. Not all fish benefit from this element.
There are many other materials that make up fish food and they vary from brand to brand as well as food that is made for specific species of fish. Of course, you should always choose a type of food that fits your species of food as well as their size. However, by knowing what is fish food made of, you’ll be able to approach and analyze what you’re feeding your fish in order to give not only your fish greater health, but your tank and all the other species within a better life.
